How do I choose a toy train or train set for a child?

Consider the child’s age, interest in trains and preferred way to play. They may enjoy moving a train through invented journeys, creating routes and destinations, or arranging it for display.

Are toy trains and train sets suitable as gifts?

They may suit a recipient with an interest in trains or imaginary journeys. Before choosing, consider their age, how they are likely to use the gift and the space available for play, display and storage.

How much space should I allow for a train set?

Think about whether it will be used on the floor or at a table, how much room can be given to play and where the set will go afterwards.

How should I choose between play and display?

Start with the recipient’s interests and how often they are likely to handle the train. If display matters, consider where it can be seen without obstructing the everyday use of the surrounding space.
